In Haudenosaunee governance, what is a sachem?

In Haudenosaunee governance, leadership is rooted in the Clan Mothers’ authority to choose and oversee leaders. A sachem is a male leader selected by the Clan Mothers to represent a clan town in the Grand Council and to help guide the confederacy on major decisions—like war, peace, and diplomacy. This system reflects a balance where women have strong influence over political leadership, appointing and removing sachems as needed, while the sachems themselves carry the day-to-day political responsibilities in council. The other roles described don’t fit this leadership function: a ceremonial dancer operates in ritual contexts, a religious priest handles spiritual duties, and a foreign ambassador is overExternal relations rather than the internal political leadership of the Haudenosaunee.
